About Kaldfjorden
Kaldfjorden — literally "Cold Fjord" in Norwegian — is a narrow inlet on the western side of Kvaløya, the large island next to Tromsø. Despite being only a 20-minute drive from the city centre, it feels like another world: steep mountains drop straight into dark water, a small fishing village clings to the far shore, and in winter the entire coastline is covered in deep, untouched snow.
The fjord is sheltered from the open sea, which means the trail along its shore is protected from the worst Arctic winds. The landscape is dramatic but the walking is gentle — a flat 3 km path that follows the waterline with views across the fjord the entire way.

The Trail: Eidkjosen to Kaldfjord Village
The snowshoe trail starts near Eidkjosen, at the mouth of the fjord, and follows the coastline southward. On your left: the fjord, often glassy and still, with Kaldfjord village visible across the water. On your right: birch forest blanketed in snow, rising steeply into the mountains. The path has no significant elevation gain — you walk at sea level the entire time.
Halfway through, there's a natural rest spot where we stop for homemade cookies and warm blackcurrant juice. It's a chance to stand still, listen to the silence, and take in the fjord stretching out in both directions. In the afternoon light, the snow glows pink and gold. In the evening, you might look up to find the northern lights overhead.

Why We Chose This Fjord
Tromsø has dozens of fjords, but Kaldfjorden stands out for guided snowshoeing. It's close enough that we don't waste your time on long drives. The terrain is flat enough for anyone to enjoy. It's sheltered enough that weather rarely cancels a tour. And it's beautiful enough that guests consistently call it the highlight of their Tromsø trip.
We also like that it's quiet. Kaldfjorden isn't on the standard tourist circuit, so you won't pass other tour groups on the trail. It feels like you have the Arctic to yourself.
Getting There
Transport is included in every tour. We pick you up from Tromsø city centre and drive you to the trailhead at Eidkjosen. After the hike, we drive you back. The total drive is about 20 minutes each way through the tunnels under the sound.
